  Dear Kyle and Bel,

  
  

  The last thing I want is to offend either of you by sticking my nose in where it doesn’t belong, or where it is neither asked for or welcomed. But it is worth the risk to me to share with you what I know to be true, because I love you both so much! I can’t just stand by quietly doing nothing as I watch you both be surrounded with so much pain and unhappiness. 

  I clearly have my own issues and certainly don’t pretend to have all the answers. Nor do I pretend to know what you are going through exactly. Everyone’s situation is unique, because our circumstances are made up of our own trials, experiences, and pasts. No one on earth can possibly understand each of our individual heartaches, frustrations, or challenges. But I can promise you that our Savior knows perfectly all that we face.  I am 100% confident in promising you that if you turn to Him, He will bring you and your family through this trial, stronger and happier than you can ever hope for or imagine. Trust Him!

  
  

  There is a story in the Old Testament where the Israelites stepped off the covenant path for a time. The story goes on to tell about one of the consequences the Lord’s people faced as they were afflicted with poisonous fiery serpents. Many were bitten by these serpents and died. Moses, a prophet of God, was instructed to raise a brass serpent high into the air, this brass serpent was to serve as a symbol of Jesus Christ. The people were commanded to look UP to this symbol and they would be healed. Those who looked up lived and those who refused because it was too simple, perished.

  
  

  This story was retold by prophets in the Book of Mormon on two separate occasions. First by Nephi while speaking to his brothers,  and then again by Alma when giving counsel to his son Helaman.  Here are their words:

  
  

  1 Nephi 17:41 And he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity. He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished.

  
  

  Alma 37:46 O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way; for so was it with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would look they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will look we may live forever.

  
  

  The adversary will try to convince us that our problems are so deep and so rooted in past mistakes that it is laughable to think that simply turning to the Savior is the solution to finding the relief we so desperately seek. I promise you both that these thoughts have or will go through your minds -“My problems, our problems as a couple, need way more fixing than some naive approach as simply looking up to the Savior.”  That is not true! Don’t be deceived by Satan, the father of all lies. Instead, listen to the words of our prophet! Why not try, there is nothing to lose, and everything to gain?

  
  

  This I know, that the world and the poison it offers are these poisonous serpents of our day. They are capable of killing us spiritually, destroying our peace, our happiness, and our families. Like Moses, God has given us a prophet, President Russel M. Nelson. Like all the prophets before him, he is raising up this same “brass serpent symbol” Jesus Christ. I testify to both of you that Jesus Christ is the only way to the happiness, peace, and rest you both seek.

  
  

  Will you each please do this one thing? 

  
  

  Will each of you read and study President Nelson’s last conference address given in October at the Sunday Morning Session of Conference titled, Overcome the World and Find Rest.  

  Kyle, you and I have read through this talk together. But I am asking both of you to make a paper copy of this talk. Read it and re read it. Mark it up. And then come together and share what you have learned with each other. (When you can consistently talk comfortably together about spiritual things, humility will take over because the Holy Ghost will be present, and love will be expressed freely and openly. It has been my own personal experience that this is when true forgiveness and healing can happen, and we can move forward together).  

  
  

  The prophet is holding up the only way to be healed from the world (fiery serpents). Don’t choose not to look, because you might think that so many other things need to be fixed in your lives and in your marriage before trying to add in the “spiritual.” That is a lie the world would have you believe. But take a look at the world’s track record when it comes to happy families. Trust the prophet!

  
  

  Our prophet is holding up that same “bronze serpent symbol”.  He is holding up Jesus Christ to all who will choose to look to Him. He is pleading with us to look up and live.  Follow the prophet’s instructions, which are the Lord’s instructions, to be healed. He spells them out very clearly in this talk. Here is just a small part of his message.

  
  

  President Nelson “ Because the Savior, through His infinite Atonement, redeemed each of us from weakness, mistakes, and sin, and because He experienced every pain, worry, and burden you have ever had, then as you truly repent and seek His help, you can rise above this present precarious world.

  
  

  You can overcome the spiritually and emotionally exhausting plagues of the world, including arrogance, pride, anger, immorality, hatred, greed, jealousy, and fear. Despite the distractions and distortions that swirl around us, you can find true rest—meaning relief and peace—even amid your most vexing problems.”

  How many of our problems, of the problems you guys face in your marriage, would go away if we eliminated these plagues from our lives. 

  The Prophet continues - “Now, overcoming the world certainly does not mean becoming perfect in this life, nor does it mean that your problems will magically evaporate—because they won’t. And it does not mean that you won’t still make mistakes. But overcoming the world does mean that your resistance to sin will increase. Your heart will soften as your faith in Jesus Christ increases. Overcoming the world means growing to love God and His Beloved Son more than you love anyone or anything else.”

  “Overcoming the world is not an event that happens in a day or two. It happens over a lifetime as we repeatedly embrace the doctrine of Christ. We cultivate faith in Jesus Christ by repenting daily and keeping covenants that endow us with power. We stay on the covenant path and are blessed with spiritual strength, personal revelation, increasing faith, and the ministering of angels. Living the doctrine of Christ can produce the most powerful virtuous cycle, creating spiritual momentum in our lives.”

  I love you guys so much. Jesus Christ really does live to wipe away all our tears, the ones we personally shed and the ones we have caused others to shed. Please turn to Him for help!
