31- Let the Holy Spirit Guide 8/28/23
Doctrine and Covenants 45:57 - For they that are wise
and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide ….
shall abide the day.
A highlight of my week has been to watch how the Spirit
is actively working with each of you. These may seem like just small examples
to you, but they really tell a bigger story of your faith and worthiness to
receive the promptings of the Spirit and to take Him as your guide. I’ll share
just a highlight from each of your siblings this past week. Pretty special for
us as parents to see!
Sadie & Seth - They shared with mama and
I this week just in conversation how they had a family council and decided
together that they should simplify their schedule to allow time for the most
important things to happen in their day to day lives.
Emma - She shared with the family in Come Follow Me how
she is gaining a greater understanding and appreciation of how the Holy Ghost
works in her life, how His presences is more constant than we sometimes
realize. We just need to strive to continuously live worthy of His
companionship. (Mama often shares Elder Bednar’s teachings about how the Holy
Ghost is always actively working through us, not just an instance here or
there) It was neat to hear Emma describing that same thing.
Early in the week Miles had sent me an email about
having studied my favorite scripture (Mosiah 3:19) in depth for his personal
study. He described how personally this verse of scripture impacts him, and how
the Holy Ghost works in him to obtain these Christlike attributes described in this
scripture. Realizing that life provides constant need for our pursuit of the
Holy Ghost’s companionship as we strive to navigate the “world” we live in and
our goal to become more Christlike.
Avery may think this is a small example, but none the
less important. She and Graham went to a Stake Fireside last night reflecting
on their FSY summer experience. While there, the group broke out into smaller
groups which gave her an easy out to slip away early. She had that thought that
she should stay, and she followed that prompting. It is easy to see this
example as Avery just being a good girl and making the choice on her own to
stay because she knows she should. But this is to the point Emma and mama were
making, the Holy Ghost can be a constant influence or flow in our thoughts.
Anything good we do is influenced by the Holy Ghost.
Graham - Graham also shared an example in Come Follow
Me that was so cute. In preparing the Sacrament for the Ward there was a man
with special dietary conditions that was unable to take the regular bread. Last
week there wasn’t an alternative for him to take so he missed the Sacrament.
This was on Grahams mind all week, and yesterday they were prepared with a
gluten free source and Graham was able to not only prepare the Sacrament, but
pass it to this man. You could tell in meant something to him.
Lainey - Lainey has always been a diligent scripture
reader. Sometimes though she procrastinates her Come Follow Me preparation to
the last minute. Yesterday she came to find me to let me know that she is going
to be better and do better about preparing her lessons in the future.
All these examples are ways in which the Holy Ghost
directs and guides ours lives. They may not be life altering examples, but
little by little that “conduit” from heaven grows and the flow becomes greater
and greater as does its influence and power.
Mama and I are so grateful that you each know how to
recognize the Spirit and how He speaks to you individually, and even more
grateful that you choose to follow His promptings.
Invitation:
I gave this invitation to my deacons yesterday and I
will extend it to each of you. For a day of personal study, go to the
scriptures and identify and journal the “roles” of the Holy Ghost. And then
next to those roles jot down an example in your own life how you have felt His
influence within that role.
Love,
Dad
