 34 (9/18/23) Moroni: Sept 21, 1823

Hello Family,

As the 200th Anniversary of Moroni’s appearance to Joseph Smith approaches in a few short days, I have re-read Joseph Smith’s history of that account as well as all the recorded words given to us by Moroni in the Book of Mormon.

It has been really fun to study closer the life of this last Nephite prophet, as well as his mission as a resurrected angel assigned to help bring forth the restoration of the gospel upon the Earth in this last dispensation and in preparation for the Savior’s return.

Below are just some of the highlights of Moroni’s life and teachings that stood out to me, things he emphasized and brought to light as well as things he experienced in his day.

  • In the last great battle of the Nephite people at the Hill Cumorah, about 385 AD all but 24 individuals of the Nephite Army were killed. Two of the remaining 24 were Mormon and his son Moroni. Sometime in the following 15 years from that battle Mormon would be killed as were the remaining Nephites, leaving Moroni to be alone for the next 21 years.
    • Think of the loneliness he must have felt for 21-36 yrs
    • Consider the important work, and record the Lord had for him to prepare before his time was up.

Mormon Ch. 8 - Don’t be critical of the Lord’s work accomplished by man who are called of God

Mormon Ch. 9 - Repent and believe in Christ durning your probation

  • The spirit we possess in this life will stay with us in the life to come - our own guilt will determine what degree of glory we are able abide
  • Strong teacher of the Plan of Salvation, of the Resurrection/Judgement/Exaltation of man
  • Miracles have not ceased - and occur by the faith of man
  • He teaches the need for baptism and that all disciple of Christ must by missionaries and engaged in the gathering of Israel
  • He taught us to be wise in our probation, to work out our own salvation, and to not yield to temptation
  • He taught us to take the Sacrament worthily and to do all we do in the name of Jesus Christ
  • Through our prayers and faith we are blessed
  • Through his hand we have the Book of Ether and the stories of the Brother of Jared and all they teach us.

It’s crazy to me how much administrative instruction is given for the restored church 1400 years in advance. Think about these next few things we learn in the Book of Mormon only from Moroni

  • Moroni Ch. 4-5 We are given the Sacramental Prayers - how huge is that
  • Moroni Ch. 6 Teaches us to meet often as members, and that alll our meetings should be directed by the Holy Ghost
  • Moroni Ch. 7 We are taught that charity should be our focus, and that miracles will always continue through faith
  • Moroni Ch 8 Adds so much clarity to the purpose of baptism and the false practice of infant baptism. It boggles my mind the this doctrine doesn’t resonate with more people.
  • Moroni Ch 10 The testimony of Moroni, that we can each know that his record is true by the power of the Holy Ghost. I have felt this power in my life countless times. Each time I read or study the Book of Mormon I feel that power.

I want each of you to know that I have a testimony of the Book of Mormon. I believe the Book of Mormon to be exactly what it is claimed to be by the prophet Joseph Smith. I believe Moroni was called of God to bring it “back from the dust” for the gathering in our day through the Restoration of the Gospel. I believe President Nelson when he promises us that reading and studying the teachings of the Book of Mormon will help us make better decisions in every aspect of our lives, decisions big and small that we make everyday.

Invitation: I know each of you have a testimony of the Book of Mormon. Continue to build that testimony, continue to pray to feel its power in your life. Say a gratitude prayer for the miracle that it is, and that you get to live in this time to have it as a guide and to be a missionary,  sharing it with others you meet.

I love you all so much and hope you have a wonderful week!

Love Dad
