64 (4-29-24)Scriptures and prophets
64 (4-29-24)
This past week in Come Follow Me we studied the first 3 chapters of Mosiah. You are all aware that one of my all time favorite scriptures is found here, but that is not what jumped out at me this week in my personal study of these chapters. What jumped off the pages were all the added knowledge and understanding we have because of the scriptures in our lives.
I was talking with the family last night about losing awareness of how much we know and understand from the scriptures and latter day prophets. It is so second nature for us to understand our true identity, our purpose in life, how to know how and when we need to regroup and recommit. The mystery of life’s purpose has been washed away by the flood of revelation we have received from prophets. But these truths are still very mysterious to the rest of the world who lack these scriptures and teachings needed to lead and guide them.
The people of Zarahemla in these early chapters of Mosiah were just like so many in our day. Good people who just don’t know their true identity. When they left Jerusalem not many years after Lehi and his family, they came to a new land without the scriptures. Very quickly they lost their language and more importantly an understanding of God and their relationship to him. Consider for minute what your life would be like without knowing these 4 basic truths:
- We are made in the image of God
- We are literal spirit sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father
- God has designed a plan from the beginning for His children to return to Him and inherit all that He has.
- Jesus Christ is God’s only begotten son in the flesh and is central in God’s plan for His children. He has provided a way for our needed redemption and resurrection through His infinite atonement for mankind.
These truths are even a mystery to the Christian world, let alone the rest of the world. The scriptures and words of the prophets are the only source to obtain these truths. The Book of Mormon and the Restoration of the Gospel and continued revelation are clearly the “keys to the mysteries” of God.
Invitation: Do a self inventory of your own personal scripture study and study of the words of living day prophets. How are you doing? If needed, recommit to making this a top priority in your day, every day!
If you find it difficult to “get into it”, take time to reflect on what you know, and how you came to know it. It was built over your lifetime line upon line, here a little and there a little. Don’t get frustrated with yourself if it is not some crazy spiritual experience every time. You already know it to be God’s word, so just soak a little truth here and there into your daily life. It is quietly building into a very strong testimony.
Love,
Dad
