Abide the Day
Happy Monday! As many of you are beginning to settle into your new routines, I thought I would share a short thought this week from my lesson I taught in Elders Quorum this week.
These are the words of Jesus Christ in response to some of His disciples asking about when He will come again, and what they must do to be ready to meet Him. “And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins.
“For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall … abide the day.”
There are three things the Savior tells us we must do to be “wise” in our preparation to meet Him, whether it be at His Second Coming, or our time to leave mortality. The invitation this week is to consider how we are doing in these three areas and what we might do to increase our preparation.
- “Receive the truth” - following the teaching of Jesus Christ. Keeping our covenants, and always remembering Him.
- “Take the Holy Spirit for our guide” - Personal Revelation. For a frequent check on how we are truly doing in this area I think the best litmus test is President Nelson’s teaching. - “Nothing opens the heavens quite like the combination of increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ in the Book of Mormon, and regular time committed to temple and family history work.”
- “Be not deceived” - What are the ways we can be deceived. This list may be too long to spell out, but I think there are a few we can use as a barometer of where we currently stand:
- Our time - are we giving the Lord a fair share of ours?
- Pride- I learned something recently in reading a self help book that has really caused me to think, and ask myself where I stand. In speaking about our human selfish nature, our ego, or pride, the author of the books said we can know if this quality is rooted in us if we are easily embarrassed, irritated, or offended. This has actually helped me as I feel myself get irritated easily. To stop, and look for the root of the problem, which is always selfishness.
- Check - How are we doing in aligning our will with God’s?
- One great way to check this is to ask ourselves how we are doing in relation to the 4 divinely appointed responsibilities we each have as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in assisting God in His work.
- Living the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Caring for those in need.
- Inviting all to receive the gospel.
- Uniting families for eternity.”
Following our Prophet is a sure way in helping us be prepared to meet the Savior. I am so thankful for a living prophet to lead and guide us.
As we keep our covenant “to always remember Him”, He has promised us the gift of Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost will lead us in every way, every time. I know this to be true.
I love each one of you so much and hope you have a great week!
Dad
